HC Deb 20 March 1917 vol 92 c44W
Mr. DEVLIN

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he can state the grounds on which Rose Simpson, an old age pensioner, lodging with John Stewart, Aughnacleagh. Portglenone, county Antrim, was refused the additional allowance by the Ballymena sub-committee; whether he is aware, that this woman is quite destitute and has no means of support apart from her pension, out of which she pays for the room she occupies, that she is no relation whatever to the person with whom she is lodging, and that she does not do any work for him that could be reckoned as compensatory; and what action he proposes to take in the matter?

Mr. DUKE

The Local Government Board have no responsibility for the action of the Ballymena sub-committee in refusing the additional allowance to an old age pensioner named Rose Simpson, nor have they any power to intervene in the matter.
