HC Deb 26 April 1917 vol 92 c2611W
Mr. BYRNE

asked the Home Secretary if he will state the number of Irish prisoners receiving hospital treatment; if he will report on their health; if he will say the nature of their employment; if he will allow an independent medical officer to examine and report on the health of the prisoners and their surroundings; and if he will order their release or, pending release, political treatment?

Mr. BRACE

Three of the Irish prisoners are in hospital, one of whom is suffering from phthisis, and the other two from slight colds. Eight others are under medical treatment for various ailments; of these, seven are employed in the garden, and the other is at indoor work. The Medical Inspector of Prisons has visited Lewes several times and is satisfied that the medical arrangements are good and the health of the prisoners well cared for. It is proposed to send the prisoner who is suffering from phthisis to a sanatorium for treatment. With regard to the last part of the question, I have nothing to add to previous replies on this subject.
