HC Deb 26 April 1917 vol 92 cc2610-1W
Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the need of economy, his Majesty's Government will take into consideration the introduction of early legislation with a view to prohibiting, during the period of the War and such further period as may be thought expedient, the opening on Sundays of refreshment houses, whether licensed or unlicensed, and the opening of shops on Sundays which are concerned in selling sweets, ice creams, etc., which are to-day largely run by foreigners, and thereby curtail waste of labour, money, and material resources in the production of such luxuries?

Mr. BRACE

My right hon. Friend does not see his way at the present time to propose legislation dealing with the very controversial subject of Sunday trading. The question of the manufacture and sale of luxuries generally is receiving the careful attention of the Government.
