§ Mr. R. MCNEILLasked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he has received from Lieutenant Patrick Barrett an application to be allowed on grounds of ill-health to resign his commission, accompanied by a medical certificate showing that this officer is suffering from pronounced nervous exhaustion requiring careful and prolonged treatment with freedom from mental worry, and stating that it is essential to his recovery that he should sever his connection with the Army; whether permission has yet been given to Lieutenant Barrett to relinquish his commission; whether, in face of the statements contained in the medical certificate, he still adheres to the view that Lieutenant Barrett has a long and useful career in the Army in prospect; and whether, having regard to the fact that Lieutenant Barrett's state of health is the result of the circumstances recently inquired into, he will reconsider the question of pecuniary compensation to this officer in order to offer him the prospect of a fresh start in life?
§ Mr. MACPHERSONAs soon as Lieutenant Barrett submits his applica- to resign it will be considered. A notification to that effect has been made to the lawyers who appear to be representing his interests.
