Mr. FLAVIN

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, taking into consideration the prolongation of hostilities and the periodical entry of the numbers of assistant clerks for permanent service, consideration will be given to the promotion of writer ranks and ratings in conjunction with future entries of assistant clerks?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The present practice of considering the promotion of writer ranks and ratings when the number of assistant clerks to be entered is decided will be continued.

Mr. FLAVIN

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he will state the number of assistant clerks entered annually for permanent service in the Royal Navy during the last seven years?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The numbers are as follows:

1910 17 + 1 transferred from military branch.
1911 24
1912 30 + 4 transferred from military branch.
1913 38 + 3 transferred from military branch.
1914 46 + 1 transferred from military branch.
1915 44 + 1 transferred from military branch.
1916 30 + 2 transferred from military branch.
