HC Deb 09 November 1916 vol 87 c438W
Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Secretary of State for War if his attention has been called to the case of Colonel Joseph Sunderland, J.P., of Ravensden Grange, near Bedford, who appeared with a double-barrelled gun to Private Arthur Horne, who was carrying a small terrier dog, the regimental mascot, and accused it of chasing his rabbits; if he is aware that the colonel in question tried to throw the soldier, and thus made him put the dog down, whereupon the colonel shot the dog dead; and if he intends taking any action in the matter?

Mr. FORSTER

I have no other information than that which is contained in the newspaper reports. As the case has been dealt with by the Courts, the last part of the question would not appear to arise. Colonel Sunderland's name does not appear in any Army list.
