HC Deb 09 November 1916 vol 87 c429W
Mr. H. TERRELL

asked the Home Secretary whether the conscientious objectors engaged on the road between Lewes, Newhaven, and Seaford are housed in huts, billets, or under canvas; and will he say what is the cost of their food, what pay they get, and how many hours they work per day and per week?

Mr. SAMUEL

The men employed on this road are all housed in huts. The average cost of their food is 2s. 0½d. per man per day. They are paid by the Committee 8d. a day, a deduction up to a maximum of 6d. being made in every case in which a separation allowance is paid by the Committee to the man's dependants. The hours of work are 8½ hours daily, with a limit of 48 hours weekly.
