HC Deb 04 December 1916 vol 88 c667W
Mr. HACKETT

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he can state the result of inquiries into the case of John Doran, Thurles, county Tipperary, Ireland, who was arrested in Glasgow on 18th August last and compelled to join the Army?

Mr. FORSTER

The case of John Doran was referred to the War Office by the Secretary for Scotland as a result of the hon. Member's question of the 23rd August. Careful inquiry was made into the facts of this case, and, as it was clearly established that the question of Doran's liability for military service had not been decided by a civil Court, and Doran did not elect to join the Army voluntarily, he was given the option of claiming his discharge.
