HC Deb 23 February 1914 vol 58 c1413W
Mr. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state how many friendly societies and branches registered before 4th May, 1911, were dissolved or ceased to carry on business in the year 1913; and the numbers of their members at the latest date available prior to dissolution?

Mr. MONTAGU

The number of such societies and branches which in 1913 were dissolved or were removed from the register because they had ceased to carry on business was 556, representing, according to the latest information available, a membership of 41,418, and funds amounting to £294,558. The above figures are exclusive of societies and branches which, although removed from the register, may still be presumed to be carrying on business, such as societies converted into branches, and societies or branches which amalgamated with others.
