HC Deb 24 October 1912 vol 42 cc2400-1W
Mr. LLOYD

asked the Postmaster-General the number of female assistants in the Cannock Post Office, the amount of their remuneration, and the maximum I hours of their work?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

The authorised staff at the office is one male assistant, who receives 24s. a week, and two female assistants. One of the female assistant posts is at present filled by a woman who receives 22s. a week. The other is vacant, but will be filled as soon as possible. Meanwhile the duty must be met, so far as necessary, by overtime, for which the male assistants are paid 8d. an hour and the female 7d. The normal hours of work are eight a day. Full-time assistants at salaried sub-offices, if duly qualified and otherwise eligible, become established after not more than five years' service, and are then on the scale of sorting clerks and telegraphists.
