HC Deb 09 October 1912 vol 42 cc361-2W
Mr. GEORGE ROBERTS

asked if steps have been taken to ascertain the amount of damage caused to the bridges and roads of Norfolk by the flood visitation of 26th August; if and what schemes of repair and reconstruction are contemplated; and whether it is proposed to make Grants from national funds to assist the local authorities to meet the extraordinary expenditure attributable to this unparalleled disaster?

Mr. BURNS

The county council and other local authorities have taken steps to ascertain the amount of damage to roads and bridges caused by the flood referred to. Some schemes of repair are now being carried out. Conferences have taken place at the Local Government Board between the officers of the county council and the officers of the Board, and I have arranged for one of my engineering inspectors to confer with the council's officers locally on the plans and proposals for works of reconstruction as soon as the county council are ready for this. A loan has already been sanctioned in respect of bridges in the Erpingham rural district. The question of a Grant from national funds will, I understand, shortly be brought before the Road Board.

Mr. GEORGE ROBERTS

asked the President of the Local Government Board if he is able to state the amount of damage caused to housing and other property in the city of Norwich by the recent flood visitation; and whether, having regard to the fact that a large housing scheme has been rendered urgent by that catastrophe, the Government propose to give assistance in facilitating this project; if so, will he indicate the nature and extent of the aid thus contemplated?

Mr. BURNS

I have seen the damage referred to, and have a fairly accurate knowledge of its extent, both from personal investigation and a perusal of my inspectors' reports on the subject. I regard the flooding as affording a good opportunity for the town council to take the matter of housing in hand, of which I have no doubt they will avail themselves. I shall be happy to give the council any assistance I can in connection with the matter of loans or otherwise.
