HC Deb 04 November 1912 vol 43 cc854-5W
Mr. LUNDON

asked the Chief Secretary in how many counties in Ireland have restored evicted tenants refused to comply with the rules of the Estates Commissioners as to the working of their lands, and their action in letting them for grazing and other purposes; and will the names of those guilty of such conduct be given according to each county, so that the general public may know who are the restored tenants guilty of this conduct, in view of the harm of such action to the genuine evicted tenants unprovided for?

Mr. BIRRELL

It would be undesirable to publish the names of the evicted tenants referred to. Legal proceedings have been instituted and are pending in some cases; in others the parties have undertaken to carry out the Commissioners' requirements; and an investigation has been directed in regard to other cases of reinstated evicted tenants who are apparently not residing on or working their holdings in a proper manner.

Mr. VINCENT KENNEDY

asked the Chief Secretary how many evicted tenants yet remain to be reinstated in county Cavan; will he state the names of the estates off which these tenants have been evicted; and whether they may expect to be dealt with before the spring of 1913?

Mr. BIRRELL

There are nine persons whose applications for reinstatement in holdings formerly occupied by them in county Cavan have been provisionally noted for consideration by the Estates Commissioners in the allotment of untenanted land, and the Commissioners are endeavouring to provide them with holdings with as little delay as possible. The former holdings of these tenants are not available, and the Commissioners do not consider any useful purpose would be served by stating the names of the estates on which the holdings are situate.
