HC Deb 04 November 1912 vol 43 c855W
Mr. MOLLOY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland upon what grounds the Local Government Board on appeal have disallowed an old age pension of 5s. per week granted unanimously on two occasions by the Carlow sub-committee to John Costigan, of Tomard Lower, Milford, county Carlow; whether two respectable farmers, rural district councillors, estimated the claimant's income at £19 11s. 6d. per annum; and can he give details of the pension officer's estimate of Costigan's income?

Mr. BIRRELL

John Costigan's claims for old age pensions were disallowed on the ground that his means exceeded the statutory limit. He is the tenant of a farm of twenty-nine acres on which were four cows, four calves, in addition to a horse and some fowl. The farm is fairly well tilled, and the moans derived from it should, in the opinion of the Local Government Board, clearly exceed £31 10s. a year.
