§ Sir GEORGE POLLARDasked the President of the Board of Agriculture the | number of acres acquired by the Lancashire County Council under the Small Holdings and Allotments Act, 1908; whether the demand for small holdings in the county of Lancaster is being satisfied; and, if not, will he state the reason?
§ Mr. RUNCIMANThe Lancashire County Council have acquired 459 acres of land under the Small Holdings and Allotments Act, 1908. There is still a large unsatisfied demand, but owing to the high value of land and the large number of small holdings already existing in the county, there is great difficulty in obtaining suitable land on terms which would allow of rents being charged such as the applicants could afford to pay. The Small Holdings Commissioner for the district has been giving special attention to the matter for some time past.
