HC Deb 02 April 1912 vol 36 c1147W
Mr. TOUCHE

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that a number of men in the Y Division of the Metropolitan Police who, in common with men of other divisions, did many hours of overtime in connection with the late strike of carmen, have received no compensation either in time or wages, whereas men of the L Division and the A Division are stated to have had their full time allowed off; and, if so, can he say whether it is intended to give similar consideration to the men of the Y Division as opportunity offers?

Mr. McKENNA

The grant of "time off" to men in the A and L Divisions, to which the hon. Member has called attention, appears to have been due to a misunderstanding on the part of the superintendents of these Divisions. Men of all the Divisions did a great deal of extra work on the occasion referred to, and for this they received the usual extra allowances. It was also taken into account in according to the whole force a substantial increase of pay which dated back so as to cover the period of special stress, and in view of this it was not intended to incur the great dislocation of duties which would have resulted from giving "time off" to the whole force.
