§ Mr. HOLTasked the President of the Board of Trade if he could state, even with approximate accuracy, the number of British subjects whose domicile is in the British Islands serving in positions other than that of a certificated officer or engineer on British vessels permanently engaged in trading between places all of which are outside the British Islands?
Mr. BUXTONI regret that I am unable to give the information desired. Some details on the lines indicated by my hon. Friend are contained in Table 23 of the Census of Seamen for 1906 (Cd. 3841), which shows the number of seamen employed on 4th April, 1906, on vessels which opened and closed agreements at foreign ports. This table does not, however, distinguish between Colonial seamen and those belonging to the United Kingdom, nor does it show where the seamen were domiciled.
