HEALYasked the Postmaster-General if he will inquire whether any of the six Catholic doctors in 1498W Dundalk is suitable or competent to hold the position of doctor to the local post office, value £10 a year; and would he have any objection to lay before the House the letter received as to this piece of patronage from the local member?
§ Mr. HERBERT SAMUELI am not aware of the religious beliefs of the doctors who have applied for the position of medical officer to the post office at Dundalk, and I do not think it necessary to inquire. It would not be in accordance with practice, nor would any useful purpose be served, by laying before the House correspondence on the subject of such appointments, or making any statement as to the sources from which information on the qualification of candidates has been received or not received. I have appointed the gentleman whose professional qualifications seemed to fit him best for the post, the remuneration of which is about £23 a year.
