HC Deb 04 August 1911 vol 29 cc770-1W
Colonel CHALONER

asked the President of the Board of Education, with reference to the Paper [Cd. 5726] relating to the registration of teachers, more especially music teachers, whether he is aware that at present only a certain section of music teachers is represented on the registration council; and whether he can see his way to provide for the due representation of all the members of the musical profession on that council?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

As regards direct representation on the new council, I must refer the hon. and gallant Member to the scheme adopted unanimously for this purpose at the Clothworkers' Hall Meeting, which was convened as representing the whole teaching profession. I have naturally not found it advisable to depart from its recommendations as regards the very difficult problem of the representation of specialist teachers and such special branches of the profession as music. The direct representation of music on the new council, however, is not confined in those or in my own proposals to one section, as he states in the question, for there are seven different musical bodies included in the scheme. I think, however, that the point which the hon. Member has in mind will, in. fact, be fully met by the special provision described in Section 32 of the White Paper to which he refers where he will find that special committees are to be established upon which that due representation of all sections of the musical profession which he desires is secured.
