HC Deb 04 April 1911 vol 23 cc2173-4W
Mr. WATT

asked the Postmaster-General if he can give the number of sorting clerks in the sorting office, Glasgow, who have been appointed to postmaster ships during the last five years; and if he can explain why that particular department is overlooked when claims for advancement are being considered?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

No sorting clerks in the Glasgow sorting office have been appointed to postmaster-ships during the last five years; but two of the supervising officers in the sorting office have received such appointments, as have also two sorting clerks and telegraphists and one supervising officer on the telegraph side at Glasgow. No department is overlooked in the consideration of appointments to postmaster-ships, but the selections are made, not with the view of equalising promotions, but with the view of appointing the men who are the best qualified.
