HC Deb 08 October 1909 vol 11 cc2466-7W
Sir JOHN BENN

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware that the wages paid to labourers employed in the Devonport Dockyard by Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Company under the contract held for the fittings, guns, and mountings on H.M.S. "Collingwood" was 20s. per week of 53 hours; whether he is aware that the recognised wages of labourers in the locality is 5d. an hour, or 22s. 6d per week for 54 hours; and whether, under these circumstances, he will take steps to have the Fair Wages Clause observed and the wages of the labourers who have been underpaid made up to the proper standard?

Mr. McKENNA

Inquiries are being made and steps are being taken in furtherance of the object of my hon. Friend's question.
