§ Mr. DEVLINasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state the amount of the United States tariff on Irish potatoes, and the actual or approximate quantity of Irish potatoes imported into the United States during the last annual period; and whether he would consider the advisability of making representations to the United States Government with a view to a reduction in the tariff?
Mr. TENNANTThe duty on potatoes imported into the United States is 25 cents, or about 1s. 0½d. per bushel of 60lb., and I understand that no alteration in this rate is proposed by the new Tariff Bill. No separate statistics are available with regard to the imports of Irish potatoes into the United States, but the total imports from the United Kingdom amounted in the year ended 30th June, 1907, to 5,673 bushels. I do not think it likely that representations to the United States Government with a view to the reduction of the duty would have any prospect of success.
