§ Mr. BUCHANANThe average number of British military officers serving in India (including Burmah) during the five years ending 31st December, 1908. is 4,763. It is impossible to state how many officers have retired through ill-health in any of those years, inasmuch as retirements due to ill-health are not recorded as such in the large proportion of cases in which officers voluntarily retire on the pensions which they are entitled to claim after certain periods of service.
