HL Deb 20 March 1997 vol 579 c1130

102 Clause 117, page 49, line 18, at end insert—

("(aa) in the entry in the first column for "Humberside", there shall be substituted "Humber";")

Baroness Blatch

My Lords, I should tell the House that this is an amendment that I did not expect to be speaking to today. Nevertheless, I beg to move that the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 102.

This amendment changes the name of the Humberside police area to Humber. Your Lordships will be aware that there was some debate in another place as to whether a change of name was desirable. The Government have no desire to oppose the wishes of the local community if there is widespread support, not just for a change of name, but for what the new name should be. The Government have made their views known on the timing and costs of any change. We envisage a gradual change to the new name. We would certainly not want to see this happen overnight, thereby diverting resources from policing activities. I commend the amendment to the House.

Moved, That the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 102.—(Baroness Blotch.)

Lord McIntosh of Haringey

My Lords, can the Minister tell the House who is going to pay for the repainting?

Baroness Blatch

My Lords, the reason I said that I hoped it would be a gradual process is because it will have to be the police authority.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
