§ 3.8 p.m.
§ The Lord ChancellorMy Lords, I beg to move the Motion standing in my name on the Order Paper.
I should also like to take the opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks, and indeed those of the whole House, to the noble Earl, Lord Grey, for the conscientious dedication that he has shown in his membership of the Joint Committee on Consolidation Bills during the past nine years.
159 We are all indebted to the effects of the Joint Committee for the vital work that it carries out in scrutinising and examining consolidation legislation put to it. At times membership must seem a somewhat thankless task far from the public eye, but I know that I have the support of the whole House when I say that without the sterling efforts of the committee the clarity of legislation on our statute book would be considerably lessened.
I should also like to welcome the incoming committee member —my noble and learned friend Lord Browne-Wilkinson. I am confident that his proven abilities as Vice-Chancellor will render invaluable his service as a committee member. I beg to move.
Moved, That the Lord Browne-Wilkinson be appointed a member of the Joint Committee in the place of the Earl Grey, resigned.—(The Lord Chancellor.) On Question, Motion agreed to.
