HL Deb 11 May 1988 vol 496 c1128

3 p.m.

Lord Denham

My Lords, with the leave of the House, I should like to say a word about the arrangements for the short debates standing in the names of the noble Lord, Lord Molloy, and my noble friend Lord Ferrier. Owing to the small number of speakers it is not necessary to propose a formal time limit for either debate, but I know that the House would appreciate it if noble Lords would confine their speeches to the limits compatible with the spirit of these short debates.

Lord Ponsonby of Shulbrede

My Lords, perhaps I may thank the Chief Whip for making that statement. He will be aware that there is considerable concern in the House about possible dangers to the health of noble Lords following reports of widespread illness among your Lordships and members of the staff. Therefore, I ask him whether the Government will make a Statement on this matter at the earliest possible opportunity.

Lord Denham

My Lords, Her Majesty's Government expect to be in a position to make a Statement later this afternoon.
