HL Deb 30 October 1986 vol 481 c814

81 Clause 38, page 42, line 34, at end insert, "and in so doing to have regard to the desirability of the premises being made available (when not required by or in connection with the school) for use by members of the community served by the school.".

Baroness Hooper

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 81.

The Government support community use of school premises. We believe that the Bill's provision to vest in the governing body control of the use of school premises out of school hours will in itself increase community use, because the new-style governing bodies will be more strongly rooted in the community, especially through increased parental representation. However, this amendment will provide further impetus in the direction of community use.

Moved, That this House do agree with the Commons in the said amendment.—(Baroness Hooper.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
