Clause 29 [For protection of British Gas Corporation]:

The Chairman of Committees (Lord Aberdare) moved Amendments Nos. 1 to 5: Page 14, line 22, leave out from ("by") to the end of line 23 and insert ("a public gas supplier within the meaning of Part I of the Gas Act 1986"). Page 14, line 27, leave out ("the corporation") and insert ("a public gas supplier"). Page 14, line 28, leave out ("the corporation") and insert ("that supplier"). Page 14, line 38, leave out ("the corporation") where it firstly occurs and insert ("a public gas supplier"). Page 14, line 38, leave out ("the corporation") where it secondly occurs and insert ("that supplier").

The noble Lord said: My Lords with your Lordships permission, I should like to speak to and to move these five amendments en bloc. They are all drafting amendments to Clause 29 of the Bill and they are required as a result of the coming into operation on 23rd August last of Part I of the Gas Act 1986. Their effect is to transfer the protection rights contained in Clause 29 from the previous British Gas Corporation to the new British Gas plc or any other authorised supplier of gas. I beg to move.

On Question, amendments agreed to.

The Chairman of Committees
