HL Deb 18 October 1984 vol 455 c1188

Baroness Masham of Ilton asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why in their Answer of 1st August to Baroness Masham of Ilton's Question concerning diving accidents they were unable to supply appropriate information from hospital special units, bearing in mind both that these are not great in number and that a telephone call to each individual unit would have provided the information.

Lord Glenarthur: Specific inquiries would need to have been make of several health authorities in England as well as the health departments of the other countries within the United Kingdom, and the general policy of Her Majesty's Government is not to require health authorities to provide information additional to that which they themselves identify as necessary for their own purposes. However, the "E" codes of the 9th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, which record the direct physical cause of an accident and where it occurred, should cover injuries caused by diving. The Health Services Information Steering Group has recommended their use and health authorities have been asked to plan on the basis that this recommendation should be implemented by April 1987.
