HL Deb 03 March 1981 vol 417 cc1318-9

2.47 p.m.

The Earl of Kimberley

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether the Kingsley School, Glebe Place, Chelsea is under special surveillance; and if so why.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Belstead)

My Lords, it is not the practice of Her Majesty's Government to confirm or deny whether any person or place is subject to surveillance.

The Earl of Kimberley

My Lords, while I thank my noble friend for that Answer—and I appreciate it—may I ask him whether he could go into a little more detail as to when the Kingsley School was last inspected—if inspected by anybody—and, if not, can it be inspected by the Department of Education to see what is being taught there?

Lord Belstead

My Lords, I am grateful to my noble friend for understanding the reason for the reply which I have given him. The school is not in operation yet. I understand that the premises are still empty and that alterations to the premises, for which planning permission from the local authority has been obtained, are being carried out. But the school, when it starts, will be required to be registered with the Department of Education and Science, and will be subject to inspection by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools.
