HL Deb 24 June 1976 vol 372 cc432-3

3.18 p.m.

Lord KENNET

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what proportion of the International Fund being set up by the World Food Council will be devoted to fisheries.

Baroness LLEWELYN-DAVIES of HASTOE

My Lords, the International Fund for Agricultural Development is not yet established, so I am afraid it is too early to say what proportion of its resources will be devoted to fisheries.

Lord KENNET

My Lords, will the Government do what they can to see that when the Fund is established fisheries are not forgotten, as they so usually are, and that a due portion of the Fund goes to increasing the rationality of the world fishery pattern?

Baroness LLEWELYN-DAVIES of HASTOE

My Lords, I do not think it will have escaped my noble friend's attention that my honourable friend the Parliamentary Secretary for Overseas Development made a very cogent speech about that very point. Her Majesty's Government are very alive to the need for using fisheries for providing animal protein and we are pressing on in every way we can to encourage its use, both in the future and in the present.

Baroness WARD of NORTH TYNE-SIDE

My Lords, may I ask the noble Baroness for an assurance that at any rate a suitable sum will in fact be directed towards helping the fisheries ?

Baroness LLEWELYN-DAVIES of HASTOE

No doubt, my Lords.
