HL Deb 20 February 1975 vol 357 cc406-7

3.19 p.m.

Lord BEAUMONT of WHITLEY

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether it is true that applicants to join the Women's Royal Naval Service have, if married, to produce the written consent of their husbands.

Lord WINTERBOTTOM

No, my Lords; that is not correct.

Lord BEAUMONT of WHITLEY

My Lords, if that is not correct, why is there a letter in my hand from the WRNS careers office assuring an applicant that it is correct?

Lord WINTERBOTTOM

My Lords, without trying to make a point, a mistake was made in replying to the lady in question.

Lord BEAUMONT of WHITLEY

My Lords, I am delighted to hear it and thank the noble Lord.
