HL Deb 23 March 1971 vol 316 c763
LORD FERRIER

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government to what extent the problems of conditions of work in licensed hotels and restaurants in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the summer months have been considered by the relative Wages Council; and whether the Council intend to review the situation.]

EARL FERRERS

My Lords, Wages Councils are independent statutory wage-fixing bodies representative of the two sides of the industries covered, and no information is available to the Secretary of State regarding the detailed considerations they take into account in formulating their wages regulation proposals. I regret, therefore, that it is not possible to provide the information sought by the noble Lord.

LORD FERRIER

My Lords, I thank the noble Earl.

LORD HUGHES

My Lords, do I take it from that Answer that the Minister is quite happy to leave the initiative with the Wages Council?

EARL FERRERS

Yes, my Lords.
