HL Deb 23 March 1971 vol 316 cc763-4
LORD SEGAL

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many ships have been stopped and searched by the Beira Patrol during the years 1970, 1969 and 1968 respectively.]

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE (LORD CARRINGTON)

My Lords, the number of ships stopped and searched by the Beira Patrol in 1970, 1969 and 1968, was four, six and three respectively. They were allowed to proceed when investigations showed that they were not engaged in breaking sanctions.

LORD SEGAL

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord for that illuminating Answer. Is he aware that at this stage I do not propose to ask him any supplementary questions, because these figures speak eloquently enough for themselves?

LORD CARRINGTON

My Lords, in answer to the noble Lord who has not asked a supplementary question, No; I was not aware of it.
