My Lords, I beg leave to ask the second Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government with regard to recruitment to the Armed Forces:

  1. (a) What from the latest figures available is the cost per recruit obtained.
  2. (b) What is the present strength of numbers of the Armed Forces presently engaged on such recruitment duties.]

My Lords, the average cost per recruit obtained in 1965–66 was £192. Some 1,500 of all ranks are engaged on recruitment duties.
