§ 2.40 p.m.
§ LORD BLYTONMy Lords, I beg leave to ask the first Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.
§ [The Question was as follows:
§ To ask Her Majesty's Government what progress has been made with the Naval House Purchasing Scheme.]
§ THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE ROYAL NAVY (LORD WINTERBOTTOM)My Lords, this scheme, which gives advances of pay to help ratings to buy their own houses, has proved to be very useful and popular, not least because it has helped to reduce the demand for married quarters. Since it started in September, 1965, nearly 3,000 ratings who have re-engaged to serve for pension (that is, to complete a total of 22 years from the age of 18) have received advances.
§ LORD BLYTONMy Lords, I thank the Minister for his Answer. Can he tell me whether under this scheme ratings can let their houses if their families join them, either abroad or at home?
§ LORD WINTERBOTTOMYes, my Lords. If they are near to a naval port or establishment they can let them to the Royal Navy through naval hirings; or, if they are suitably situated elsewhere they can let them to either of the other Services.
