HL Deb 18 March 1964 vol 256 cc845-6

2.54 p.m.

THE EARL OF KINNOULL

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what they intend to do about "Panda" crossings.]

LORD CHESHAM

My Lords, the results of the experiment with this type of crossing have needed very careful and thorough consideration in the light of reports received from interested bodies. The Ministry of Transport has worked closely with the Road Research Labora- tory in analysing the results and in relating them to a review of pedestrian crossing policy as a whole. Our examination of this important matter is not quite complete, but my right honourable friend the Minister of Transport will make an announcement as soon as possible.

LORD LUCAS OF CHILWORTH

My Lords, may I ask the noble Lord whether he can find a way to persuade the police to enforce the law relating to pedestrian crossings? At the present time it is in complete contempt, and if the noble Lord would care to test that for himself I would ask him to observe the pedestrian crossing outside the Houses of Parliament, which is a death trap to most pedestrians.

LORD CHESHAM

My Lords, with the greatest respect, I think that the question which the noble Lord has raised is considerably wider than that on the Order Paper.
