§ 2.54 p.m.
§ THE EARL OF KINNOULLMy Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.
§ [The Question was as follows:
§ To ask Her Majesty's Government what they intend to do about "Panda" crossings.]
§ LORD CHESHAMMy Lords, the results of the experiment with this type of crossing have needed very careful and thorough consideration in the light of reports received from interested bodies. The Ministry of Transport has worked closely with the Road Research Labora- 846 tory in analysing the results and in relating them to a review of pedestrian crossing policy as a whole. Our examination of this important matter is not quite complete, but my right honourable friend the Minister of Transport will make an announcement as soon as possible.
§ LORD LUCAS OF CHILWORTHMy Lords, may I ask the noble Lord whether he can find a way to persuade the police to enforce the law relating to pedestrian crossings? At the present time it is in complete contempt, and if the noble Lord would care to test that for himself I would ask him to observe the pedestrian crossing outside the Houses of Parliament, which is a death trap to most pedestrians.
§ LORD CHESHAMMy Lords, with the greatest respect, I think that the question which the noble Lord has raised is considerably wider than that on the Order Paper.
