HL Deb 18 February 1959 vol 214 c339

2.35 p.m.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS (THE EARL OF HOME)

My Lords, I know that the whole House, right at the beginning of our Business to-day, would like me to express to the Prime Minister of Turkey our horror and deep sympathy at the tragic air accident in which his colleagues and countrymen lost their lives. At the same time, we should like to add personally to him our profound relief at his merciful and miraculous escape, and our good wishes for a complete and speedy recovery.

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, I am glad indeed that the noble Earl the Leader of the House has taken the opportunity to make the statement which he has just made. I am quite certain that every section of your Lordships' House—and I can speak for the whole of my Party—desire to be fully associated with every word he has said.

LORD REA

My Lords, I think it goes without question that everybody in every quarter of this House would like to associate himself with the noble Earl the Leader of the House. Incidentally, I myself have made a call at the London Clinic, and I am sure your Lordships will be glad to know that the latest news is as good as ever. We hope the Turkish Prime Minister will make a quick recovery to complete health.
