HL Deb 24 June 1958 vol 210 c72

2.42 p.m.

VISCOUNT STANSGATE

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether any representations have been made to them on the question of televising the proceedings at the State Opening of the next Session of Parliament; what is their attitude to the matter; and whether they would seek the opinion of the House and another place, and, if agreement is general, whether they would propose to this House an Address to Her Majesty seeking the necessary permission.]

THE EARL OF HOME

My Lords, suggestions have been made from time to time that the State Opening of Parliament should be televised. Her Majesty's Government have this question under consideration at the present time. I am therefore not in a position to give the noble Viscount an Answer to-day.

VISCOUNT STANSGATE

My Lords, I am most grateful to the noble Earl. Could he indicate at all after what interval I might be allowed to put down another Question on the same subject?

THE EARL OF HOME

My Lords, it depends how long the consideration lasts.

VISCOUNT STANSGATE

But it will be before the House rises for the Summer Recess?

THE EARL OF HOME

My Lords, I cannot pledge myself, but I am always anxious to meet the noble Viscount, so far as I can.
