HL Deb 17 April 1957 vol 203 cc104-5

THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION (VISCOUNT HAILSHAM)

My Lords, I understand that during my short absence abroad conversations took place between the usual channels and that it was ascertained that the course indicated in the Motion in my name on the Order Paper would be most acceptable to your Lordships' House. I therefore have great pleasure in moving the Motion standing in my name.

Moved, That the Order of the 2nd instant directing that the Report of the Amendments be received on the 7th of May next be discharged, and that the Bill be recommitted to a Committee of the Whole House on Tuesday, 7th May, next.—(Viscount Hailsham.)

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, I am much obliged to the noble Viscount. There was a good deal of feeling that, as a considerable number of matters had been left over for consideration from the Committee stage, it would facilitate the passage of the Bill if we had any new proposals thoroughly discussed. We thought that if we re-committed the Bill, with, of course, the Government's consent, we could have full discussion. I hope that it may be possible then to avoid any discussion on Report stage. It is not that we want especially to take up extra time of the House.

On Question, Motion agreed to, and ordered accordingly.
