HL Deb 23 July 1956 vol 199 c7
LORD MANCROFT

My Lords, the principal object of these somewhat formidable-looking Regulations is to provide increases in the awards to the widows and children of deceased police officers. This is done in three ways. The Regulations ensure that widows and children whose awards are related to the deceased officer's pay will qualify for increases equivalent to those provided in the Pensions (Increase) Act, 1956. They introduce a new uniform scale for widows' and children's flat rate awards. This scale incorporates the increases provided under the Pensions (Increase) Act 1956, and under previous Pensions (Increase) Acts. Finally, they provide that certain discretionary awards which have hitherto been payable in substitution for a basic pension, shall in future be payable in addition to the basic award. I commend the Regulations to your Lordships, as I am sure they will assist a body of pensioners who deserve well of the community. I beg to move that the Regulations be approved.

Moved, That the Draft Police Pensions (No. 2) Regulations, 1956, reported from the Special Orders Committee on Wednesday last, be approved.—(Lord Mancroft.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
