HL Deb 24 November 1954 vol 189 cc1890-1

2.39 p.m.

LORD BLACKFORD

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether, in view of forthcoming increased restrictions on parking, unfrequented parts of the Royal Parks might be made available as car parks between the hours of 9.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays, such as the road north of the Serpentine; the road in front of the Albert Memorial; the inner circular road in Regent's Park; and whether parts of Rotten Row might be so used, since equestrian traffic between those hours on midweek days is very slight.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (LORD CARRINGTON)

My Lords, my honourable friend the Minister of Works has to balance the need to maintain the amenities of the Royal Parks and their use for rest and recreation against the very serious need for more space for parking motor cars. My honourable friend is discussing with the Minister of Transport the arrangements for the parking of cars in the Royal Parks in Central London. There are objections to allowing parking in the particular areas mentioned by my noble friend, but the matter is being considered. An announcement will be made in due course by my honourable friend.

LORD BLACKFORD

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord for his Answer.
