HL Deb 23 November 1954 vol 189 c1803

2.40 p.m.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government (1) whether any representations have recently been made to the Egyptian Government in regard to its continued connivance in offensive broadcasts to East Africa; (2) whether a statement can be made regarding the xenophobe incitements of Cairo's broadcasts in North Africa.]

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (THE MARQUESS OF READING)

My Lords, Her Majesty's Ambassador in Cairo has on several occasions protested against the tone of Egyptian broadcasts to East Africa, and I am happy to say that, in spite of occasional lapses, the general tone of these broadcasts has recently improved. With regard to the second part of the noble Lord's Question, Her Majesty's Government certainly deplore the subversive character of many Egyptian broadcasts to French North Africa.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, has the noble Marquess noticed that M. René Mayer, the former French Prime Minister and Deputy for Algeria, has intimated that Algeria is in the N.A.T.O. area and, therefore, France may refer the whole trouble to the N.A.T.O. organisation?

THE MARQUESS OF READING

My Lords, I have observed that report.
