HL Deb 22 November 1954 vol 189 cc1715-6

Clause 10, page 10, line 45, after ("milked") insert—

  1. ("(i) at any stage of a journey to or from a dairy farm,
  2. (ii) at a slaughterhouse or knacker's yard, or
  3. (iii)")

LORD CARRINGTON

My Lords, this Amendment goes with those at page 11, line 3; page 11, line 4; and page 11, line 12. The object of the first two Amendments is to enable regulations to be made prohibiting the sale for human consumption of milk which has been obtained from cows milked while on a journey or while at a slaughterhouse or knacker's yard. The third Amendment is drafting, as is the fourth. I beg to move that the House doth agree with the Commons in the first Amendment.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.—(Lord Carrington.)

LORD SILKIN

My Lords, as a matter of interest, what is the objection to selling milk from a cow which has been milked in the course of a journey?

LORD CARRINGTON

My Lords, the noble Lord is a farmer and will know that stringent regulations are made about cowhouses and the standard to which they have to be kept so that the milk produced from the cows is produced under conditions which are clean. A cow which was being transported in a lorry might be in a dirty lorry, with the result that the milk produced might be dirty. This Amendment seeks to prevent that happening.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
