HL Deb 18 March 1953 vol 181 c46

2.39 p.m.

EARL HOWE

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether arrangements can be made for a twenty-four-hour census of traffic to be taken at the more important bottlenecks on the main traffic routes such as Markyate, Biggleswade, High Wycombe, Maidenhead, Staines, Reigate, Redhill, Maidstone, Ingatestone, distinguishing between heavy and light vehicles if possible, for a period of a week in each case.]

THE EARL OF BIRKENHEAD

My Lords, my right honourable friend the Minister of Transport regrets that the limited sixteen-hour pilot census, which is all that he can arrange in the coming financial year, 1953–54 with the restricted funds available, will not cover any of the places mentioned by the noble Earl, but he hopes to be able to carry out a more comprehensive census in the subsequent financial year and will certainly bear in mind the suggestion made by my noble friend.
