§ 2.40 p.m.
§ LORD VANSITTARTMy Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.
§ [The Question was as follows:
§ To ask Her Majesty's Government whether it is a fact that, as announced by Chinese Communist radio, the premises of Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, in Canton, have been requisitioned, and, if so, what compensation has been paid.]
§ THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY)My Lords, wharves and go-downs at Canton belonging to Messrs. Butterfield & Swire were requisitioned on February 24 by the Canton Military Affairs Commission. No compensation has been paid. On March 12 Her Majesty's Chargé ďAffaires at Pekin, acting on instructions, made representations to the Chinese Government about this case.
§ LORD VANSITTARTMy Lords, I thank the noble Marquess for his reply. I am glad to see him back in the House, and will refrain from any supplementary questions to-day, beyond saying that I hope pressure will be maintained.
