HL Deb 01 April 1953 vol 181 c454
EARL HOWE

My Lords, I beg to ask the second Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what is the latest information in the possession of the Ministry of Transport on the traffic conditions obtaining in Markyate and Staines throughout the twenty-four hours, and when was the information obtained and over what period.]

THE EARL OF BIRKENHEAD

My Lords, as the Answer to this Question contains a vast number of figures, I will, with the noble Earl's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The Answer was as follows:

The latest figures for Markyate were given in answer to the noble Earl's Question of the 3rd March, except that I regret that the figure of 3,488 commercial vehicles over a 16-hour day in April, 1952, was incorrect and should have been 5,091.

A 15 m.p.h. speed limit is in force at Markyate. Congestion is often caused there by the narrowness of the carriageway, which is only 18 ft. wide, and by the large number of heavy commercial vehicles.

In the vicinity of Staines the latest information on traffic figures comes from the August, 1938, census for Class A roads and from the August, 1936, census for Class B roads, both of which were 16-hour counts over a period of seven days.

The figures are:

ness of the carriageway on A.30 which varies from 21 to 28 ft. in the main part of the town, with two footways which are each only about 6 ft. wide.
