HL Deb 22 October 1952 vol 178 cc833-4

3.7 p.m.

LORD MOTTISTONE

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether, in view of the unexpected delay, due to economic causes, in proceeding with the building of the new Colonial Office, and of the sad event which has led to an earlier Coronation ceremony than could have been foreseen when the matter was in debate, due note will be taken of any congestion which may be experienced in June next at the approaches to the west doors of Westminster Abbey before the new building line to Broad Sanctuary is finally determined.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (THE EARL OF MUNSTER)

My Lords, it will not be possible to draw any new conclusions about the building line of the new Colonial Office to Broad Sanctuary from any congestion that may be experienced on the occasion of the Coronation. A stand is to be erected on the site of the new Colonial Office on the frontage line of the old Westminster Hospital, and the limits of the structures on the approaches to the West doors of Westminster Abbey will be approximately the same as in 1937.

LORD MOTTISTONE

My Lords, may I thank the noble Earl for his reply? I hope that due notice will be taken of any congestion which does occur on that occasion, so that perhaps the building line may be reconsidered later.
