HL Deb 01 July 1952 vol 177 cc519-20

LORD CLYDESMUIR

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what progress has been made with the making of awards to officers in the non-Secretary of State Services in India and Pakistan under the scheme announced by the late Viscount Addison, Leader of the House of Lords, on July 6, 1949.]

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, I am glad to be able to say that good progress has been made in making these awards, and that the scheme has proved a boon to a number of officers. Since its introduction in July, 1949, awards ranging from £95 to £2,410 have been made to 99 officers at a total cost of £70,870. A few claims are still under examination. Her Majesty's Government are indebted to my noble friend and the other noble Lords who, in association with the late Earl Wavell, have given their help and advice in consideration of the individual cases.

LORD CLYDESMUIR

My Lords, may I thank my noble friend for his answer and for the great interest which he has personally taken in the scheme? After I have had time to study the answer more closely, may I discuss any points arising out of it with him?

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

I can assure the noble Lord that I shall be delighted to discuss any points he wishes to raise.
