THE LORD CHANCELLOR (LORD SIMONDS)

My Lords. I have the honour to inform your Lordships that I have received certain further messages with reference to the death of his late Majesty. The first is from the President of the Conseil des Etats, of Switzerland. It is as follows:

"The news of the sudden death of His Majesty King George VI has profoundly grieved the Conseil des Etats Suisse. In its name and in my own I beg you to accept and to transmit to the members of the House of Lords the expression of our most lively sympathy."

The second is from the President of the Senate of the Republic of Uruguay:

"By the unanimous wish of the Senate of the Republic of Uruguay, I have the honour to express to your House the most profound condolences at the death of His Majesty King George VI. I send to the House of Lords the assurance of my highest consideration."

The next is from the President of the Egyptian Senate:

"On behalf of the Egyptian Senate I convey to the House of Lords the expression of the deep regret with which the Senate has learned the news of the death of His Majesty King George VI. We express to the House of Lords the profound sympathy of this House with Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Family and with the Parliament of Great Britain."

From the President of the First Chamber of the States-General of the Netherlands I have received an expression of sincere sympathy together with English translations of speeches which the President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs delivered at a meeting of the First Chamber of the States-General on February 6, in commemoration of His Majesty King George VI. These speeches (which will be recorded in the Journals of the House) expressed in eloquent and moving terms the high regard with which His late Majesty was held by the Dutch nation.

Finally, I have received this Resolution from the Irish Senate:

"The Irish Senate extends its deep sympathy to the Royal Family, the Parliament and the people of Britain on the death of His Majesty King George VI."

These Messages have been suitably acknowledged on behalf of your Lordships.
