HL Deb 01 May 1951 vol 171 c614

4.20 p.m.

THE LORD BISHOP OF LONDON rose to move to resolve, That in accordance with the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act, 1919, this House do direct that the Cathedrals (Appointed Commissions) Measure, 1951, be presented to His Majesty for the Royal Assent.

The right reverend Prelate said: My Lords, this Measure is to enable a payment to be made to special commissions which may be appointed to investigate Cathedral Statutes. Under the old Measure a comprehensive commission was appointed to investigate Cathedral Statutes all through the country, and arrangements were made for the Church Commissioners to pay for that work to be done. It was provided also that if any further inquiry was made in any particular case an ad hoc commission should be set to do that work. Unfortunately, however, arrangement was not made for the payment of the ad hoc commission. That is the relief which is desired in this Measure. It is sought to give the Church Commissioners power to pay for the special commission. I beg to move.

Moved to resolve, That in accordance with the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act, 1919, this House do direct that the Cathedrals (Appointed Commissions) Measure, 1951, be presented to His Majesty for the Royal Assent.—(The Lord Bishop of London.)

On Question, Motion agreed to, and ordered accordingly.
